Artemis II launched the first crewed mission to the moon in 50+ years on April 1st. They sent four humans 452,000 km behind the moon and brought them back to splash down in the pre-calculated spot.
The Crew
- Reid Wiseman - Commander
- Victor Glover - Pilot
- Christina Koch - Mission Specialist
- Jeremy Hansen - Mission Specialist (Canadian)
10 day mission. Lunar flyby, not landing.
What Happened
The Nutella jar - Floated through the cabin during a livestream right before breaking the Apollo 13 distance record. Nutella’s social team had a field day.
Toilet mishap - Burning smell, limited use, “space plumbing” memes everywhere.
Microsoft Outlook crashed - Even in space, email is broken. Tech support memes followed.
Crater naming - Jeremy Hansen proposed naming two new craters “Integrity” (after the Orion spacecraft) and one honoring the commander’s late wife.
Re-entry
The ISS caught the re-entry.
Landing
They landed on the 10th and spent 30+ min trying to get comms working.
The problems on this mission were:
- Broken toilet
- Outlook not working
- Unable to pair a Bluetooth device
- Communication with a vessel that’s 20m away
